Eco Terms

We understand that navigating eco-space can be overwhelming. We've compiled some standard terms for furniture, fixtures, and decor products used in interior design. This will help you know what goes into furniture, what is left out, and more about the values, efforts, and practices.

Organic is made with natural materials grown, harvested, or processed without harmful pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals. 2. Organic furniture is often more sustainable and environmentally friendly because it uses less resources than conventional furniture

Natural refers to natural materials, such as wool, cotton, jute, wood, and natural latex, derived from rubber trees. There are PFAS-free natural and synthetic fabric blends with plant-based or eco-certified finishes for excellent stain resistance. Natural is not certified by a governing body, as is the case in organic products

Eco-certified refers to materials certified by eco-organizations. These typically indicate the purity of the material, fair labor practices, and high product safety. To qualify, building materials must be made primarily from renewable virgin, mineral, and secondary resources for which recycling is logistically and energetically feasible.

Eco-Friendly and Eco-Conscious refers to sourcing sustainable, natural, and eco-certified materials whenever possible and building for longevity to reduce waste. Many traditional furniture pieces use paints, stains, or glues containing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which can harm the environment and indoor air quality. Eco-friendly options opt for low-VOC or VOC-free finishes, making them safer for the planet and its inhabitants.

Sustainable: Sustainable furniture and interior design prioritize the creation of products that are built to last. By using high-quality materials, employing skilled craftsmanship, and considering user needs, designers create furniture and interior elements that withstand the test of time. Durable designs reduce the frequency of replacements, minimizing waste generation and conserving resources in the long run. Moreover, well-crafted and timeless designs have the potential to transcend trends, ensuring the longevity of the products and reducing the environmental impact associated with constant consumption. According to the EPA, over 12 million tons of furniture are estimated to end up in landfills yearly, making up about 5% of this country's waste. Look for companies prioritizing making high-quality furniture built to last, not quickly tossed in landfills. Minimize our environmental impact by using more biodegradable, sustainable materials. If your furniture ends up in a landfill, it will break down without the same level of harm that furniture constructed with a greater synthetic composition might.

Nontoxic and Clean: Take great care when deciding on your furnishings. Work with eco-certification programs, avoid materials with high levels of unchecked harsh chemicals, and choose brands that use third-party testing when necessary to ensure the absence of unwanted substances. In essence, choose those that build the healthiest furniture they can, using natural and certified materials. Plant-based latex and wool furniture are some of the most nontoxic options because they use natural materials instead of synthetic ones.
